WORLD'S BEST COUNTRY IN BUSINESS ENGLISH

PH: World’s Best Country in Business English

By Shielo Mendoza | Yahoo! Southeast Asia Newsroom – Wed, Apr 25, 2012

Well, people will now have to think twice before mocking Pinoys’ use of the English language.
The Philippines was named the world’s best country in business English proficiency, even beating the United States, according to a recent study by GlobalEnglish Corporation.
GlobalEnglish has released early this month the results of its annual Business English Index (BEI), the only index that measures business English proficiency in the workplace.
For 2012, results showed that from 76 represented countries worldwide, only the Philippines attained a score above 7.0, “a BEI level within range of a high proficiency that indicates an ability to take an active role in business discussions and perform relatively complex tasks.”
“This is particularly interesting because the Philippines, a country with one-tenth of the population of India, recently overtook India as a hub for call centers. Over 400,000 Filipinos are now employed in call centers, roughly 50,000 more than in India,” the study said.
The Philippines, which scored 7.11 and the lone country in the intermediate level, were joined by Norway (6.54), Estonia (6.45), Serbia (6.38) and Slovenia (6.19) in the top five.
GlobalEnglish noted that a country’s business English capability is an indicator of its economic growth and business success.
“It is not surprising that both the Philippines and Norway—the only two countries in the top five in both 2011 and 2012—are improving their economies, based on the latest GDP data from the World Bank,” it added.

FILIPINOS SPEAK ENGLISH IN DIFFERENT ACCENT AND PRONUNCIATION.

Philippines has several dialects other than the country's "universal language" which is Filipino, and the second language English.  It is expected that once you encounter a number of Filipinos speak English, whether fluently or some, they speak it in different pitch, intonation, pronunciation, and in different English accent.

What is important is that once an individual speaks in English, it does not matter if the accent is not American, Canadian, Australian, South African, or British.  Neutral Accent is more acceptable because clarity of speaking the English words (and correct pronunciation, at least), as much as knowing how to converse in basic or professional (business) english, is important in order to be understood by any foreign nationals around the world.

There are some 120 to 175 languages in the Philippines, depending on the method of classification.  Four others are no longer spoken. Almost all are Malayo-Polynesian languages, while one, Chabacano  is derived from a Romance Language. Two are official, while (as of 2010) twelve are official auxiliary languages.

Philippine languages are often referred to by Filipinos as dialects, partly as a relic of the inaccurate vocabulary used in literature during the American period (1898–1946). While there are indeed many hundreds of dialects in the Philippines, they represent variations of no fewer than 120 distinct languages, and many of these languages maintain greater differences than those between established European languages like French and Spanish.

There are 13 indigenous languages with at least one million native speakers:

Tagalog
Cebuano
Ilokano
Hiligaynon
Waray-Waray
Kapampangan
Bikol
Albay Bikol
Pangasinan
Maranao
Maguindanao
Kinaray-a
and Tausug

One or more of these is spoken natively by more than 90% of the population.

National and official languages

Spanish was the national and official language of the country for more than three centuries under Spanish colonial rule, and became the lingua franca of the Philippines in the 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1863 a Spanish decree introduced universal education, creating free public schooling in Spanish. It was also the language of the Philippine Revolution, and the 1899 Malolos Constitution effectively proclaimed it as the official language of the First Philippine Republic. National hero José Rizal wrote most of his works in Spanish. Luciano de la Rosa established that Spanish was spoken by a total of 60% of the population in the early 20th century as a first, second or third language. Following the American occupation of the Philippines and the imposition of English, the use of Spanish declined gradually, especially after the 1940s.
Under the U.S. occupation and civil regime, English began to be taught in schools. By 1901, public education used English as the medium of instruction. Around 600 educators (called "Thomasites") who arrived in that year aboard the USS Thomas replaced the soldiers who also functioned as teachers. The 1935 Constitution added English as an official language alongside Spanish. A provision in this constitution also called for Congress to "take steps toward the development and adoption of a common national language based on one of the existing native languages." On November 12, 1937, the First National Assembly created the National Language Institute. President Manuel L. Quezón appointed native Waray-Warayspeaker Jaime C. De Veyra to chair a committee of speakers of other regional languages. Their aim was to select a national language among the other regional languages. Ultimately, Tagalog was chosen as the base language December 30, 1937.
In 1939, President Manuel L. Quezón renamed the Tagalog language as Wikang Pambansa ("national language" in English translation).[6] The language was further renamed in 1959 as Pilipino by Secretary of Education Jose Romero. The 1973 constitution declared the Pilipino language to be co-official, along with English, and mandated the development of a national language, to be known as Filipino. In addition, Spanish regained its official status when President Marcos signed Presidential Decree No. 155, s. 1973.
The present constitution, ratified in 1987, designates Filipino and English as joint official languages. Filipino also had the distinction of being a national language that was to be "developed and enriched on the basis of existing Philippine and other languages." Although not explicitly stated in the constitution, Filipino is in practice almost completely composed of the Tagalog language as spoken in the capital, Manila; however, organizations such as the University of the Philippines began publishing dictionaries such as the UP Diksyonaryong Filipino in which words from various Philippine languages were also included. The constitution also made mention of Spanish and Arabic, both of which are to be promoted on a voluntary and optional basis.
Filipino is an official language of education, but less important than English. It is the major language of the broadcast media andcinema, but less important than English as a language of publication (except in some domains, like comic books, which are meant to speak directly to the Filipino psyche) and less important for academic-scientific-technological discourse. English and Filipino compete in the domains of business and government.[dubious ] Filipino is used as a lingua franca in all regions of the Philippines as well as within overseas Filipino communities, and is the dominant language of the armed forces (except perhaps for the small part of the commissioned officer corps from wealthy or upper-middle-class families) and of a large part of the civil service, most of whom are non-Tagalogs.
There are different forms of diglossia that exist in the case of regional languages. Locals may use their mother tongue or the regionallingua franca to communicate amongst themselves, but sometimes switch to foreign languages when addressing outsiders. Another is the prevalence of code-switching to English when speaking in both their first language and Tagalog.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF LEA SALONGA:

Lea SalongaKLD (/ˈlə səˈlɒŋɡə/; born February 22, 1971), is a Filipina singer and actress who starred in the lead role of Kim in the musical Miss Saigon, for which she won the OlivierTonyDrama DeskOuter Critics and Theatre World awards.[2][3] Salonga is the first Filipino artist to be signed to an international record label (having been signed to Atlantic Records in 1993). She is also the first Philippine-based artist to have received a major album release and distribution deal in the United States (the second being Charice Pempengco with her 2010 album Charice), and one of the best-selling Filipino artists of all time, having sold over five million copies of her albums worldwide.
She was the first Asian actress to play the roles of Éponine and Fantine in the musical Les Misérables on Broadway. She portrayed both roles on the musical's 10th and 25th anniversary show in London respectively. She also provided the singing voice of two officialDisney PrincessesJasmine in Aladdin (1992), and Fa Mulan in Mulan (1998) and Mulan II (2004).  Salonga was named a Disney Legend in 2011 for her work with The Walt Disney Company.

Personal life

On January 10, 2004, Salonga married Robert Charles Chien, a Chinese-Japanese managing director of an entertainment software company in Los Angeles, California, whom she met while doing Flower Drum Song. They have a daughter, Nicole Beverly, who was born in 2006, named after Salonga's late mother-in-law, Beverly. She is also an avid video game enthusiast, and has mentioned her love for the hobby in several of her print articles.
On October 15, 2010, Salonga was nominated Goodwill Ambassador of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Voice and Musical ability

Salonga has a soprano range from D3 to C6. Salonga has been praised for the control over her powerful vocals which can easily showcase a wide array of emotion and soundscapes. In her popular music releases, Salonga has been known to sing "simple love songs" which is common in traditional Original Pilipino Music. In both Disney princess singing voices, Salonga showcases her head tones which reach up to F5. Salonga's most famous role as Kim in Miss Saigon has been known as showcasing her voice well from the top to the bottom. Her top notes have a bright and angelic quality, while her lower range has warm round tones.

Salonga was honoured as a Disney Legend on 19 August 2011.
She was chosen to serve as one of the judges in the 60th Miss Universe 2011 Beauty Pageant in São Paulo, Brazil on 12 September 2011. She was tasked to ask Miss Angola Leila Lopes – who went on to become Miss Universe – during the question and answer portion.
Lea has appeared in various Broadway Musical Productions  around the world and she is one of the best and highly recognized celebrities in the world who has achieved a lot in her personal life and career (concerts in the Philippines and overseas, and Various Broadway Musical Shows since she was a child).
