MISS WORLD BEAUTY PAGEANT

(See also Miss World, Miss International, Miss Earth, Miss Supranational Beauty Pageant)

The Miss World pageant is the oldest surviving major international beauty pageant and was created in the United Kingdom by Eric Morley in 1951.

Miss World actually started out as the Festival Bikini Contestin honour of the recently introduced swimwear of the time, but was dubbed ‘Miss World‘ by the media.

MISS WORLD

Beach Fashion - Philippines - Megan Young

Megan Young (centre) from the Philippines poses after winning the Miss World title in Nusa Dua, on the Indonesian island of Bali on September 28, 2013

Gowns worn by Maegan Young was created for her by a Filipino based Designer, Francis Libiran (designer for Filipino celebrities/ known also for his Hello Kitty creations for the The Next America's Supermodel contestants)

Philippines’ bet Megan Young becomes the "most beautiful woman in the world" as she wins the Miss World 2013 title during the pageant's coronation night on September 28 (Saturday) in Bali, Indonesia.

This year’s highly controversial pageant just made history after it installed the first-ever Filipina to win the coveted blue crown—bringing virtual chills and cheers online and in the rest of the Philippines, the country that she perfectly represented in what has been dubbed as "the oldest surviving beauty pageant in the world."

The 23-year-old Filipino-American actress and TV host presented the aura of a Miss World-in-the-making. Ultimately, Megan's winning answer to the question on why she should win Miss World, "Miss World for me treasures the core value of humanity and that guides her into understanding people, why they act the way that they do, how they're living their lives and I will use these core values in my understanding not only in helping others but to show other people how they can understand others, to help others so that as one, together, we shall help society," won over the answers of Miss Ghana Carranzar Naa Okailey Shooter who placed third in the competition and Miss France Marine Lorphelin who placed second.

Miss World 2013 Final

Fearless forecast becomes reality

The Miss World organizers have placed Megan in three of the five challenge events (formerly called fast track):  first in the Top Model category, fourth in the Multimedia category, and fifth among the 11 finalists in the Beach Fashion Final.

While they no longer give the challenge events winners a sure spot in the final round, the winners have been awarded bonus points to their preliminary scores.

Years in the making

Megan Young goes down in history as the first-ever Filipina to win Miss World—breaking a popular urban legend that no Filipina will ever win the title.

Despite the Philippines' successful finish in Miss Universe and other international beauty tilts, the Miss World crown has been elusive until 62 years later. (Miss World was reportedly founded in 1951)

In 2011, the Philippines almost won the title when Gwendoline Ruais placed second to Ivian Sarcos of Venezuela.  In 2012, Queneerich Rehman made it to the Top 15 while in 1993,  Sharmaine "Ruffa" Gutierrez placed 2nd runner-up to Lisa Hanna of Jamaica.

MISS WORLD PHILIPPINES 2013

Megan Young is the country’s newest representative to the Miss World pageant on September 28 in Indonesia.

The Fil-Am actress, who was crowned on Sunday, August 18 at Grand Ballroom of the Solaire Resort and Casino in Pasay City,  took home a P1 million cash prize.

The 23-year-old Olongapo beauty bested 25 other finalists—including #10 Janicel Lubina – First Princess, #5 Zahra Saldua - Second Princess,  #19 Bianca Paz - Third Princess, and  #18 Omarie Linn Osuna - Fourth Princess.

Megan was clearly a crowd favorite, on-ground and online, as supporters flocked to the coronation venue despite the downpour. #MeganMW2013 remained in the Twitter trending list even before the 10p.m. telecast in GMA-7 began.

The TV star also won eight out of 16 special awards, including Best in Fashion Runway.

MANILA – All eyes are now on actress Megan Young – not because of a new showbiz project, but because of her win in this year’s Miss World Philippines pageant.

Young was named the third Miss World Philippines winner at the coronation night held at the Solaire Resort and Casino in Pasay City on Sunday. She will represent the country at the Miss World 2013 pageant in Indonesia this September.

Will the Philippines finally have its first Miss World winner in Young? As she prepares for the international pageant, here are some of the Filipinas who have performed well in the past Miss World competitions.

Queenierich Rehman (2012)
More popularly known as the “beatboxing beauty queen,” Queenierich Rehman was last year’s representative to the Miss World pageant, where she made it to the Top 15.

While she was not able to win the crown, Rehman was one of the most talked-about candidates in the Miss World pageant after stunning audiences with her beatbox performance during the talent portion.

A video of her performance went viral online, and was featured on Time magazine’s website and on the Huffington Post.

Philippine Representatives before Miss World

Philippines

This section presents a list of representatives of the Philippines before Miss World Philippines started as a pageant organization. The Philippines first sent a contestant to the Miss World pageant in 1966. From then to 1976 the Philippine representative to Miss World was chosen through the Miss RP (Miss Republic of the Philippines) pageant. In 1977, the franchise was transferred to the Mutya ng Pilipinas (Pearl of the Philippines) pageant, which selected the official Philippine delegate until 1991. Then in 1992 to 2010 the Binibining Pilipinas Charities Incorporated selected the Philippine representative to the Miss World Pageant. In 2011, Julia Morley ended the contract with Binibining Pilipinas and awarded the franchise to Cory Quirino to hold Miss World Philippines, a separate national pageant for Philippines representatives to the Miss World pageant.

Note: Marjorie Wallace, the 1973 winner, became the first titleholder not to complete her reign, when in March 1974, she was fired for "failing to fulfill the basic requirements of the job". Organisers extended an offer to first runner-up Evangeline Pascual of the Philippines to complete the duties of Miss World for the remainder of the year, but without holding the title; when Pascual turned down that offer, organisers next turned to second runner-up Patsy Yuen of Jamaica, who accepted.
